Do you struggle with rough, dull, or bumpy skin?

It could be congestion.

The pores on our skin are like tiny openings that allow sweat, oil, and dead skin cells to escape. However, when these pores become clogged with excess oil and dead skin cells, it causes congestion. This congestion can lead to the formation of blackheads, whiteheads, and pimples. As time passes, the blockage can worsen, causing the pores to enlarge and making the skin’s texture appear uneven and bumpy.

We recommend clearing congestion at Quartz with the Aquafirme Medical Grade Facial or utilizing one of our Chemical Peels. Both treatments remove debris that clogs your pores by exfoliating the skin’s surface and extracting the blackheads.

We offer a variety of at-home treatment options that prevent congestion for all skin types, like our ZO Complexion Renewal Pads. Come into Quartz for an Aesthetic Consultation to see what treatments or products we would recommend for your unique skin concerns.

Do you have Keratosis Pilaris?

Have you ever noticed those tiny little bumps on the back of your arms or legs? Still trying to figure out what they are? Want to get rid of them?

Those tiny little bumps are called Keratosis Pilaris, “KP” for short. They occur when the hair follicles get plugged with dead, dry skin. KP is typically found on the back of the arms and legs but can also affect the backside. You may notice them more in the colder, dryer months. The bumps are harmless but can be bothersome, making the skin feel rough and dull.

Here are some simple solutions to minimize Keratosis Pilaris (and create smoother skin).

Solution #1

ExfoliatE

Regular exfoliation is a vital step in any skincare routine. It involves the removal of dead skin cells that accumulate and clog the hair follicles, which can lead to rough, uneven skin texture. By incorporating daily exfoliation techniques, such as dry brushing, scrubs, or chemical exfoliants, you can effectively slough off dead skin cells, revealing a smoother, healthier-looking complexion. Not only does it help improve the skin’s texture, but it also allows skincare products to penetrate better, leading to more effective results.

At Quartz, we have several exfoliants to choose from, and one of our favorite products for Keratosis Pilaris is ZO Skin Health Body Emulsion. It contains Retinol and Lactic Acid to increase cell turnover, gently exfoliate and hydrate.

Solution #2

Moisturize

One of the best ways to manage Keratosis Pilaris is by following a two-step process that involves exfoliating and moisturizing. We recommend exfoliating your skin during or after a bath or shower to get the best results. After exfoliating, apply a moisturizer to your skin immediately to help lock in moisture and keep your skin feeling soft and smooth. By following this two-step process regularly, you can help improve the appearance and texture of your skin and prevent future KP breakouts.

If you’re looking for hydration we have a variety of options available for you to choose from at Quartz Mind, Body + Skin.

Why is Vitamin C Important?

Vitamin C is the most underrated nutrient that assists in almost every aspect of bodily function.

A deficiency in Vitamin C can cause a plummeting of your body’s natural anti-inflammatory, immunomodulation and collagen production. It can result in a variety of negative outcomes, including but not limited to adrenal insufficiency, poor wound healing, long lasting colds, increased reactivity to allergens etc.

Symptoms of low Vitamin C include fatigue, weakness, muscle and joint aches, swollen and bleeding gums, slow wound healing, dry and scaly skin, and frequent infections. In severe cases, it can lead to scurvy, which can cause anemia, gum disease, and skin problems.

Studies show that the average low-activity (sedentary) human needs 110mg of Vitamin C per 60kg (and an additional 10mg per additional 10kg) to be taken daily to prevent a deficiency (like scurvy).

Citrus fruits contain large quantities of vitamin C

Scurvy is no longer a common problem because we usually have enough Vitamin C in the average diet to prevent this syndrome, however our needs increase as our stress levels do. Stress levels can be tied to increased levels of activity, strenuous exercise, injury, sickness, lifestyle changes and mental health concerns.

When meeting with one of our Naturopathic Physicians (like Dr. Zurekova ND or Dr. Dhindsa ND), they will recommend a daily dose of Vitamin C based on your nutritional demands, stresses, gastrointestinal health and the form of Vitamin C delivery for attaining adequate amounts to support your body and lifestyle.

At Quartz Mind, Body + Skin Clinic we offer oral supplements for your therapeutic needs. And, if the deficiency is significant IV Therapy may be a suitable treatment method.

PRP Basics

Platelet Rich Plasma, commonly known as PRP, is drawn from your own blood, placed in a centrifuge to separate the platelet-rich plasma from the rest of the blood. It can be applied to the surface of the skin when combined with other cosmetic treatments like Skinpen Microneedling or injected in a therapeutic setting to assist in the healing process for potential injuries and muscle tears.

Platelet-Rich Plasma treatments offer a range of benefits. These include reducing inflammation, improving tissue healing, increasing collagen production, reducing hair loss, improving skin texture and tone, reducing joint pain and inflammation, improving joint mobility and function, reducing muscle pain and soreness, and improving athletic performance. These benefits make PRP treatments an attractive option for people seeking a non-invasive and natural way to enhance their physical health and appearance.

Cosmetic USES

PRP is a treatment that has various cosmetic and therapeutic uses. The cosmetic uses of Platelet Rich Plasma include reducing fine lines and wrinkles, tightening and toning skin, minimizing acne scars, reducing the appearance of hyperpigmentation and dark circles, stimulating hair growth, and enhancing the results of facial rejuvenation procedures such as microneedling and laser treatments.

PRP treatments can stimulate hair growth when injected into the scalp.

The winter months are not only harsh on the hydration of our skin, but the heat blasting indoors can also cause us to become dehydrated and lacking in essential minerals– leading us to potentially have a mineral deficiency. Unfortunately, most of our drinking water is void of minerals that support hydration and the general functioning of the brain and body.

WHat are the symptoms of a mineral deficiency?

A mineral deficiency can have several effects on the body, depending on which mineral is lacking. Minerals are essential for various bodily functions, such as building strong bones and teeth, carrying oxygen in the blood, regulating fluid balance, and supporting muscle and nerve function.

When the body lacks essential minerals, it can lead to a range of symptoms and health problems. For instance, iron deficiency can cause anemia, which can lead to fatigue, weakness, and shortness of breath. Calcium deficiency can cause weakened bones, muscle cramps, and even seizures. Magnesium deficiency can cause muscle twitches, cramps, and irregular heartbeat. Zinc deficiency can lead to a weakened immune system, slow wound healing, and hair loss. Similarly, other minerals like potassium, sodium, and iodine are also essential for various bodily functions, and their deficiency can cause a range of symptoms.

It’s important to maintain adequate intake of all essential minerals through a balanced diet that includes a variety of nutrient-dense foods to prevent mineral deficiency and its associated health problems.

Minerals are naturally occurring inorganic substances that are essential for various bodily functions. They are found in soil, water, and food, and are required in small amounts to maintain optimal health.

Our Naturopathic Physicians recommend adding minerals to your water (like our Complete Mineral Complex by Designs for Health) to help you not only stay hydrated but to assist in overall health and well-being.

Feeling under the weather?

If you have recently been under the weather, feeling lethargic, or looking to boost your energy levels, we highly recommend booking an IV Therapy Assessment. Our Naturopathic Physicians will put together an IV Infusion that utilizes a complex of all trace minerals and combine them with other nutrients and amino acids to support your specific needs and concerns.

What IS MAGNESIUM?

Magnesium is one of the most essential minerals for our health. It is necessary for maintaining proper nerve and muscle function and acts as a cofactor to build DNA, RNA, and many proteins. Unfortunately, it is commonly deficient in the Canadian population due to poor diet, medication, and stress. Deficiency can create a pro-inflammatory state in the body, which may have numerous health implications.

Symptoms of magnesium deficiency may include muscle cramps, tremors, muscle weakness, fatigue, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, constipation, irregular heartbeat, and even seizures. In some cases, a magnesium deficiency can also lead to anxiety, depression, and insomnia.

Magnesium has many forms— Bisgylcinate, Citrate, L-Threonate, Taurate, Chloride, Malate, and more. Every form of magnesium can support different areas of the brain and body to help with optimal health. For example, studies have shown that acute migraines and headaches can be caught and treated with orthomolecular doses of magnesium and other medication intravenously for fast-acting management.

Magnesium rich foods can lead to a balanced diet.

Our Naturopathic Physicians recommend exploring all the options in a Naturopathic Assessment or IV Assessment to address what concerns you may have and to correctly choose the supplementation that would best support your overall health and well-being.

If you have recently been struggling with a migraine or headache, feeling lethargic, or looking to boost your energy levels, we highly recommend booking an IV Assessment. Our Naturopathic Physicians will put together an IV Infusion that utilizes a complex of all trace minerals and combine them with other nutrients and amino acids to support your specific needs and concerns.

When Winter blossoms into Spring and the temperature rises, it signals our bodies to adapt to the external environmental changes. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, the spring season is our transition from Yin to Yang.

Yin is the “feminine,” “moon,” and “cloudy” energy, and Yang is the “masculine,” “sun,” and “bright” energy. Yin-Yang is a dynamic transformation that occurs throughout the year and affects our internal and external world. The key is to create harmony within these energy meridians to reduce imbalances that cause illness.

In Chinese medicine, several signs indicate the need for organ detoxification. These signs include fatigue, brain fog, skin problems, bloating, constipation, insomnia, and mood swings. When our bodies accumulate toxins, it can lead to imbalances in our internal energy meridians, causing these symptoms. Detoxification can help to restore balance and promote overall health and vitality. If you are experiencing any of these signs, it may be a good idea to consider a detox program or speak with a naturopathic doctor for guidance.

As we transition from winter to spring, our body undergoes various stresses, and one of the most significant changes occurs in the liver. The liver becomes highly active during this transition, and supporting it through detoxification can have numerous benefits. Detoxification essentially involves removing toxins from the body, which can have a positive impact on our health and well-being. When we detoxify our liver, it can function more efficiently, leading to improved digestion, better metabolism, and a more robust immune system. Therefore, it is crucial to support our liver through detoxification during the winter-spring season transition to promote optimal health outcomes.

Detoxification is a natural process that our body undergoes to eliminate toxins and harmful substances. While our body has its natural detoxification mechanisms, there are several ways we can enhance this process to detoxify our organs effectively.

Here are some of the best ways to support detoxification:

  1. Drink plenty of water to help flush out toxins from your body.
  2. Eat a healthy diet of fiber, fruits, and vegetables to help support natural detoxification processes.
  3. Exercise can help sweat out toxins from your body and increase blood flow to your organs.
  4. Adequate sleep is essential for the body to regenerate and detoxify.
  5. Alcohol and caffeine can tax the liver, so it’s best to reduce their intake.
  6. Stress can contribute to toxin buildup in the body, so it’s essential to practice relaxation techniques like meditation, deep breathing, and yoga
  7. There are several natural supplements available that can help support natural detoxification in the body. Some of our Naturopathic Doctors’ favorite seasonal products include PurePaleo Protein Powder, PaleoGreens, and PaleoReds by Designs for Health to support and detox your body while providing valuable vitamins and nutrients.

Overall, making lifestyle changes and incorporating these practices into your daily routine can support optimal organ health and natural detoxification. At Quartz, our Naturopathic Doctors are here to help support you whether you are looking for a full-body detoxification program, products, treatments, or specific dietary guidelines.

Collagen has become increasingly popular for aesthetics and oral supplementation. There are several benefits, including improving skin health, supporting joint health, promoting muscle mass, and aiding in digestion.

Collagen is a matrix of specific amino acids that provide structure, support, and strength to your skin, muscles, bones, and connective tissues.

What are the symptoms of low collagen?

Low levels could have several symptoms, including sagging skin, wrinkles, joint pain, and weakened hair and nails. Losing collagen in the skin decreases elasticity, causing the structure to weaken, which will increase fine lines and wrinkles. If you lose collagen in your joints, your joints may deteriorate, causing weak and achy joints. It also plays a vital role in the health of our hair and nails; low levels can lead to brittle nails and dry, damaged hair.

Collagen production slows down as we age.

How do you improve collagen levels?

A great way to improve your collagen levels is by taking an oral supplement or a whole-body collagen powder. There may need to be more than oral supplementation because the amino acids (proline, glycine, and hydroxyproline) may struggle with absorption if the proper levels of Vitamin C, Zinc, Copper, and Manganese are absent.

Our Naturopathic Doctors suggest introducing a regenerative IV formulation that includes all of these amino acids and co-factors for optimal absorption for those with a Collagen deficiency.

Do you usually get sick in the winter?

When the weather gets colder, the leaves change from green to gold, and the warm sunny days turn to cold, misty mornings — it’s time to look at our health habits. Our bodies and immune systems take time to adjust to the colder temperatures, which can give us a window of opportunity to get sick.

Below are some tips to help support your immune system (on top of washing your hands!)

Immune System Tip #1 Eat for the Season

Eat for the Season

Aim to eat cooked and easy to digest foods (stews, soups, roasted food, etc.) and avoid cold, raw veggies and icy drinks.

Don’t forget to stay hydrated with warm/hot water (herbal tea) or room temperature water. Bonus if it is Mineral rich water (Santevia or concentrate minerals).

Protect Your Neck

The back of our neck is extremely sensitive to temperature. This can result in a significant change in our core body temperature, leaving us prone to colds and flus. Make sure to bundle up!

In traditional Chinese medicine, the neck and shoulders are our “wind gates” and when left open an “evil wind” can enter our body and make us sick.

Immune System Tip #2 Protect Your Neck
Immune System Tip #3 Supplements

Supplements

Vitamin D3 can help prevent major inflammatory responses, dampen how extreme a fever you endure and shorten the duration of the cold/flu.

Now is a great time to explore what type of supplements are best for your individual needs.

Book a mini consult with an ND to learn more.

IV Therapy & IM Injections

Our Naturopathic Doctors have created immune modulating IV formulations and IM Injections specific to colds/flus. (Most people are a good candidate for 100ml bags but blood testing may be required for larger doses).

Immune System Tip #4 IV Therapy and IM Injections
Immune System Tip #5 Reduce Alcohol

Reduce Alcohol

Take it easy on the alcohol and brace yourself for bigger events. Alcohol is a known depressant of not only mood and sleep but also of the immune system as it destroys our gut biome. Our gut biome supports our mental health, metabolic health, hormonal health and immunological health. Be nice to your GUT!

Improve Sleep Quality

Make sure you’re getting your ZZZ’s during fall and winter. Not only is it anti-aging, blood sugar regulating, but deep and good quality sleep between 9pm and 6am is actually immunomodulating too!

Immune System Tip #6 Improve Sleep Quality
